Most vendors that include an auto-update check do so only when their application is started and do not perform scheduled background checks when none of their products are in use, some do like java and google applications etc but most don't. To me that is BAD! GAOTD offerings do no offer updates unless specifically permitted by the vendor or a new GAOTD offering occours which means if an update is found by the giveaway build then it normally will revert to a trial version and usually the trial will have long expired. So today I searched the Kingsoft writer application for any possible setting that could be used to signal that there was a background automatic update check but found none whatsoever, only mention of online update checking facility is in the Help menu called "Update Online" and using that produced a similar pattern of http requests that happend silently in the background when no kingsoft application was open and none had been opened prior in that windows login session. Whilst doing some routine packet sniffing on my laptop today I noticed some unexpected HTTP requests coming from a user agent I did not recognise making requests to, this was of concern as I usually purposfully disable all GAOTD offerings update checks that I can find in the programs settings. Where Username = the logged in users login name, the scheduled task is called "WpsUpdateTask_Username"Īs a GAOTD user you'd be best advised to disable the scheduled task if not delete it completly, stopping it removes a regular resource usage blip that could tip the balance on long sessions and cause a resource depletion sourced crash.Īs a GAOTD user you'd be best advised to disable the scheduled task if not delete it completly, stopping it removes a regular resource usage blip that could tip the balance on long sessions and cause a resource depletion sourced crash. even comercial anti-malware products rarely check for updates that frequently! Give it a rest is my suggestion to kngsoft, all GAOTD offerings that do not include a GAOTD compatible update service should have this scheduled upadate check tasks removed copletely and normal release should only need to check at most once daily but weekly is more likely to be more apropriate, the product would not be a target for zero-day atacks because its small user base compared to MS office and openoffice. It is set to run at 08:45 every day and then hourly from then onwards so it keeps on going on and on and on. Found where the update event is instigated, it is a "normal" task schedular task.
